Ancient Indian timekeeping revives at Lord Vishwanath’s sacred court. A sunrise-based Vedic marvel now graces Varanasi.
The 10-foot Vikramaditya Vedic Clock was activated at sunrise in Kashi Vishwanath Dham’s Mandir Chowk. Madhya Pradesh CM Dr. Mohan Yadav gifted it to UP CM Yogi Adityanath on April 3 during ‘Samrat Vikramaditya’ mahanatya. Developed by Maharaja Vikramaditya Research Peeth, Ujjain, it mirrors the world’s first such clock inaugurated by PM Modi in Ujjain on February 29, 2024.
The clock tracks 30 muhurtas from one sunrise to the next, blending Vedic panchang with IST and GMT. It displays tithi, nakshatra, planetary positions, shubh muhurta, weather, and Vikram Samvat month. A 700-kg digital display changes scenic backgrounds hourly; linked app offers 7,000+ years of data in 180+ languages.
Inspired by Emperor Vikramaditya’s era, it restores Hindu time reckoning from midnight-free days into muhurtas of ~48 minutes. Now in Kashi after Ujjain and Bhopal CM residence, plans extend to other Jyotirlings. Installed with full rituals on April 4, it educates pilgrims on Vedic sciences amid Kashi’s spiritual aura.
Devotees gain instant access to authentic Hindu calendar insights, bridging past wisdom with modern needs at Asia’s grandest temple corridor.
