Days after Madhya Pradesh High Court declared Dhar’s Bhojshala complex a Vagdevi temple, two Hindu petitioners have demanded free entry for devotees and claimed idols of Hanuman and other deities may be buried beneath the premises.

Petitioner Ashish Goyal from ‘Hindu Front for Justice’ filed an application to the Archaeological Survey of India on May 20, demanding that worshippers should not be charged even the existing Re 1 entry fee. He claimed charging fees amounted to “disobedience” of the May 15 High Court order recognising the site as a temple. Goyal also sought the immediate opening of a locked room in the south-eastern part of the complex, claiming it formed part of the original temple structure, and demanded the removal of “unauthorised Islamic symbols” from the premises.

Another petitioner, Kuldeep Tiwari, made similar demands in a separate application to the Union Culture Ministry and ASI. Tiwari claimed a strong local belief that idols of Lord Hanuman and other Hindu deities were buried beneath the complex. He sought scientific excavation to retrieve and reinstall them with religious rituals.

In its May 15 verdict, the High Court declared Bhojshala’s religious character as Vagdevi temple. It quashed ASI’s April 7, 2003, order allowing Muslims to offer namaz on Fridays and Hindus to worship only on Tuesdays. ASI on May 16, granted Hindus unrestricted access for worship and other purposes.

Devotees are performing puja at Bhojshala amid tightened security while ASI implements the High Court order.

Bhojshala’s sacred identity as a Hindu temple is being fully restored through systematic action.
