A 25 year old Hindu factory worker named Dipu Chandra Das has been lynched to death and his body set on fire by a mob in Mymensingh city, Bangladesh, over alleged blasphemy. Das was beaten outside the factory on Thursday night, hanged from a tree, and then his body was left on the side of the Dhaka Mymensingh highway where an angry crowd set it ablaze, blocking traffic on both sides.
Police recovered the burnt body and sent it for autopsy at Mymensingh Medical College morgue, with local authorities confirming that the incident has created tension in the area and efforts are underway to control the situation. Inspector Abdul Malek of Bhaluka Model Police Station confirmed the sequence of events, and a video of the incident went viral on social media, exposing the brutality of the attack.
Bangladesh’s interim government issued a statement condemning the lynching, saying there is no space for such violence in the new Bangladesh and that perpetrators of this “heinous crime” will not be spared. The statement also condemned all acts of violence, intimidation, arson, and destruction of properties, and called on citizens to reject and resist violence, incitement, and hatred.
This is the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting the Hindu minority in Bangladesh since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. Hindus continue to face targeted violence, intimidation, temple desecration, and mob justice in the name of blasphemy or other pretexts, with no visible structural protection or accountability despite repeated assurances from the caretaker administration.
