Thieves loot Nalla Pochamma Temple in Bahadurpally and damage the deity. Silver ornaments and hundi cash were stolen overnight.
Unidentified thieves targeted the Nalla Pochamma Temple in Bahadurpally, Dundigal suburb of Hyderabad, stealing silver ornaments adorning the deity, cash from the donation hundi, and other valuables. The criminals broke open the main door lock after the temple priest locked the premises and left on Wednesday night. During the theft, they also damaged the presiding deity. The crime came to light Thursday morning when the priest returned to open the temple for devotees.
Dundigal police have launched an investigation into the incident, examining CCTV footage from surrounding areas and questioning local residents. This theft adds to growing concerns about temple security across India, where sacred spaces face repeated targeting by organised criminals. The incident highlights the vulnerability of smaller temples lacking comprehensive security infrastructure compared to larger pilgrimage sites. Local devotees have expressed shock and anguish over the desecration of the deity alongside the material loss.
Temple thefts represent not merely property crimes but violations of sacred trust and community faith. The damage inflicted on the deity compounds the offence, transforming theft into sacrilege. Authorities must prioritise temple security, particularly for smaller shrines serving local communities with limited resources for protection.
When temples face attack, faith communities feel violated. Sacred spaces deserve protection. Every theft from a temple is an assault on devotion itself.
