A temple theft case was reported from Odisha’s Cuttack district, where miscreants targeted the ancient Budhakeshwar Temple in the Niali area late on Tuesday night. The temple, located on the banks of the Prachi River, was broken into by unidentified persons who escaped after carrying out the theft.
According to reports, miscreants broke open the locks of the temple’s storeroom, the priest’s room, and the adjoining Hanuman temple. They allegedly stole utensils and cash worth around ₹1.5 lakh. The incident came to light later, creating tension among devotees and temple authorities.
Temple servitor Chandan Kumar Dash said, “I return from the temple every night after completing all rituals. When I arrived this morning around 6 a.m., I found the locks of my room, the storeroom, and the Hanuman temple broken. I immediately informed villagers and board members.”
Temple trustee Fakir Charan Jena stated, “This is an unfortunate incident. Thousands gather every day for prayers, and such an incident has taken place.” Trust Board members and devotees have urged police to identify and arrest the culprits at the earliest. Police reached the spot and initiated an investigation.
The incident revives concerns over repeated temple theft cases in Odisha. Around a year ago, similar thefts were reported from the Balipatna police station area in Khordha district. Police arrested the main accused and busted a racket involved in such crimes.
With miscreants reportedly becoming active again, locals are calling for stronger security measures at vulnerable temples to prevent further incidents.
