Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken part in the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav at the Somnath Temple, one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, marking 75 years since the inauguration of the reconstructed Somnath Temple in 1951. The festival celebrates the resilience and continuity of the Hindu faith at this ancient coastal shrine, with large‑scale devotional and cultural events in the temple town and along the seafront.

The Somnath Amrut Mahotsav commemorates the rebuilding of the present Kailash‑Mahameru style temple, completed under Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s leadership, and its formal consecration on May 11, 1951, by India’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad. The event underlines the historical and spiritual significance of Somnath as a symbol of unbroken devotion, despite repeated destruction and reconstruction over the centuries.

Prime Minister Modi’s presence at the Mahotsav includes special prayers, a public roadshow through Somnath, and participation in cultural and patriotic functions that portray the temple as both a centre of Sanatana Dharma and a national icon of self‑respect and resurgence. The 75‑year milestone is being framed as a moment of collective pride for Hindu devotees, linking the temple’s long‑standing history with India’s modern‑day civilisational journey.
