A historic spiritual moment took place in Brazil when the first-ever Lord Ganesha murti in Latin America received Pran Pratishtha at Centro Cultural Vishva Vidya in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro. The consecration ceremony, conducted with full Vedic rites, prayers, and traditional rituals, formally installed the deity and marked a major milestone for the growing Hindu community in the region.
The murti, enshrined at Instituto Vishva Vidya, founded by Brazilian teacher Jonas Masetti (also known as Vishvanatha), symbolises the deepening roots of Sanatana Dharma in South America, where Hindus are estimated to number between 300,000 and 400,000, concentrated mainly in Guyana and Suriname, with smaller communities in Brazil and other countries. The event was attended by Indian ambassador to Brazil Dinesh Bhatia, devotees, and local community members, underscoring the bridge this shrine creates between Indian spiritual culture and Latin American society.
Instituto Vishva Vidya, located in the “Cidade Imperial” of Petrópolis, has for years served as a hub for Vedanta, Sanskrit, and Vedic culture, with tens of thousands of students enrolled in its online and in‑person programmes. Jonas Masetti, a direct disciple of Swami Dayananda Saraswati and recipient of the Padma Shri in 2025 for global promotion of Vedic knowledge, has long championed the integration of Hindu philosophy and practice outside India; the Lord Ganesha Pran Pratishtha now adds a visible, ritually grounded centre of Bhakti and devotion to that mission.
