A powerful lightning strike hit the historic 11th-century Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. The sacred flag atop the temple was burnt. Around 40 CCTV cameras and several electrical systems were damaged. Temple servitors reported severe electrical disturbances inside the sanctum sanctorum. Some devotees and servitors suffered minor injuries.

The city witnessed intense lightning and heavy rainfall. Waterlogging disrupted normal life across major roads in Bhubaneswar. Temple authorities raised concerns over the lack of proper earthing, accusing the Archaeological Survey of India of negligence.

A five-member ASI team inspected the site to assess the damage and begin restoration. The burnt flag has been replaced, and repair work is underway. Despite these efforts, the incident has left devotees and servitors deeply distressed.

Lingaraj Temple is one of Odisha’s most revered shrines, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Such incidents remind us of the fragility of our sacred spaces and the need for proper protection and care. Murtis, temple structures, and symbols are not just historical monuments. They are living centers of faith, devotion, and dharmic practice.

Devotees are urged to remain calm and continue worship with reverence. Protecting our temples is a collective responsibility. While nature’s forces are beyond human control, preventive measures can minimize harm.

This incident calls for reflection. Our temples have stood for centuries, weathering storms and time. With proper care, they will continue to inspire devotion for generations. Let us uphold respect, faith, and dharmic duty in every action towards our sacred heritage.
