A nine-year-old girl named Padmavathi sustained injuries after concrete slab fragments fell on her during darshan at Kanaka Durga Temple in Vijayawada on Thursday. The child from Guntur was performing metla puja on the temple steps when the incident occurred.
Temple staff immediately shifted Padmavathi to the first aid centre. She was later advised to undergo examination at a government hospital as a precaution. “The girl was treated at the first aid centre and is doing fine. Since she is a small kid, we suggested a hospital check-up as a precaution,” a staff member confirmed.
Locals alleged negligence, claiming medical assistance was not immediately available. However, temple staff denied these allegations, maintaining that the situation was promptly handled. The incident has triggered concern among devotees over safety arrangements at the sacred premises.
Kanaka Durga Temple, perched on Indrakeeladri hill, draws thousands of devotees daily seeking blessings from the goddess. Safety at such crowded pilgrimage sites remains critical for protecting vulnerable devotees, especially children performing sacred rituals.
