Poorly timed roadworks disrupt Tiruchanur temple Brahmotsavams. Devotees face chaos as tar laying blocks vital access route during festival.

Ill-timed road beautification work on Tiruchanur Road in Tirupati caused significant hardships for devotees attending the annual Brahmotsavams at Goddess Padmavati Ammavari temple. The roadwork began Monday, coinciding with the festival’s opening flag hoisting ceremony during the auspicious Karthika month. Contractors closed one of two vents under the Tiruchanur flyover for tar topping, forcing vehicles from both directions to crawl through a single passage. Buses struggled making U-turns, creating chaotic traffic conditions.

Even Endowments Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, attending to offer silk vastram on behalf of the state government, was caught in the traffic jam. The timing drew widespread criticism as the road is typically illuminated with welcome arches well ahead of the nine-day festival. Hundreds of pilgrims visit Tiruchanur temple as essential part of Tirumala-Tirupati pilgrimage to seek blessings from the Goddess of prosperity. Tirupati District SP L. Subbarayudu acknowledged devotees’ ordeal and assured the closed portion would reopen within days while traffic police ensure free flow through the open vent.

This administrative failure highlights poor coordination between departments responsible for infrastructure and religious affairs. Conducting major roadworks during significant temple festivals demonstrates insensitivity to pilgrim needs and disrespect for religious calendars. Authorities must synchronize development activities with festival schedules to avoid inconveniencing devotees who travel from across India for darshan.
