Preparations are underway for the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 chariot construction in Puri, Odisha, with work commencing following the customary rituals on Akshaya Tritiya.
The construction of three chariots for the annual Rath Yatra began on Monday, marking the auspicious Akshaya Tritiya, and includes the preparation and assembly of the three grand chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.
The “Biswakarma Sevaks” (carpenter servitors) began crafting the three chariots—Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, and Debadalana—for Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.
Over 200 skilled artisans will be involved in the construction work in the coming weeks, including carpenters, Bhoi servitors, blacksmiths, woodcutters, tailors, and painters.
At least 742 pieces of wooden logs will be used for Lord Jagannath’s 45.6 ft-high Nandighosh chariot, 731 logs for Lord Balabhadra’s 45 ft-high Taladhwaja chariot, and 711 logs for Devi Subhadra’s 44.6 ft-high Darpadalana chariot.
A total of 865 wooden logs is required annually for the construction of the three chariots, with 47 logs remaining unused from the previous year and 818 new logs being procured.
The annual Rath Yatra is scheduled for July 16, 2026, and will attract millions of devotees from across India and around the world.
