Upset Hindus have called on Poltrona Frau and Giobagnara to withdraw a yoga mat made from premium cow leather, saying it is deeply insensitive to Hindu sentiments.
Rajan Zed said the product appears to mock two sacred ideas in Hinduism, the cow and yoga. He argued that yoga is a profound Hindu discipline, while the cow holds a revered place in Hindu life and tradition. He said placing the two together in this way is painful and inappropriate.
Zed also urged the brands to issue a formal apology and act with greater ethical responsibility. He said respected luxury houses should not engage in religious appropriation or products that can be seen as mocking a faith community.
He further called on retailers, including ABASK, to stop selling the product. The mat is listed for $1,735 and is being marketed as a luxury item. Zed said companies that claim to value design, culture, and heritage should be especially careful not to offend religious traditions.
The objection reflects a broader concern among Hindus about the commercial use of sacred symbols and practices. For many, yoga is not just exercise. It is part of a spiritual and philosophical tradition rooted in Hindu thought.
The appeal is clear: faith should not be turned into fashion at the cost of dignity and respect.
