The Supreme Court will hear on July 20 a batch of petitions seeking a fair and time-bound probe into the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
Four separate pleas related to the issue will come up before a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana. The court had earlier directed the Uttar Pradesh government’s Special Investigation Team to submit a status report and had also issued notice to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.
The petitioners have sought a CBI-led, court-monitored investigation and a forensic audit of the Trust’s finances. One plea also seeks a Comptroller and Auditor General audit. The petitioners argue that the allegations involve serious financial irregularities and affect the faith of millions of devotees.
The SIT was formed on June 13 after the temple trust raised concerns over possible misappropriation of donations. It comprises senior officials from the administration, police, and finance departments.
The July 20 hearing will be a key moment in the case, as the court examines whether the current probe is adequate or whether a stronger, independent investigation is required.
