Historic Baladevjew Temple in Kendrapara to receive Rs 100 crore makeover. Parikrama Project aims to transform ancient shrine into premier heritage destination.
Odisha’s historic Baladevjew Temple at Ichhapur, Kendrapara will undergo comprehensive redevelopment under the Parikrama Project following a high-level review meeting chaired by Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan. The meeting, attended by MP Baijayant Panda, senior district officials, and the Endowment Commissioner, finalized blueprints for beautification including improved pathways, landscaping, lighting, and visitor-friendly amenities. The Rs 100 crore project aims to position the temple as a leading pilgrimage and heritage destination while preserving cultural significance.
The Detailed Project Report is in progress with construction expected to begin within the current financial year. MLA Durga Prasan Nayak confirmed the Works Department will soon commence beautification activities. The temple, dedicated to Lord Baladevjew, was reconstructed in 1761 during Maratha rule by Raja Gopal Sandha after the original shrine was demolished in 1661 by Mughal governor Khan-i-Duran who built a mosque on its remains. Devotees secretly preserved the deity, moving it through Govari river before establishing the current temple at Tulasi Kshetra.
The temple showcases Kalinga architectural style with seven-layered construction using Baulamalia stones. It houses Manibigraha deities including Jagannath and Subhadra alongside Baladevjew. The site holds deep mythological significance where Lord Balaram defeated demon Kandara during Dwapara Yuga. This redevelopment honors centuries of devotion while providing modern infrastructure for millions of pilgrims.
