Badrinath Temple portals close for winter at 2:56 PM today, marking the end of this year’s Char Dham Yatra. Over 5,000 devotees witnessed the sacred closing ceremony in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. The temple was adorned with 12 quintals of marigold flowers for the occasion. The ceremony resonated with devotional tunes from the Army band and chants of Jai Badrivishal, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere despite the cold weather.
The closing ritual followed prescribed Vedic traditions performed by Rawal Amarnath Namboodri, the chief priest of Badrinath temple. The Panch Pujas began on November 21, followed by the closure of Ganesh Temple, Adi Kedareswar, and Adi Guru Shankaracharya Gaddi site. Tomorrow morning, the throne of Adi Guru Shankaracharya, along with Shri Kuber Ji, Uddhav Ji, and Rawal Ji, will depart for their winter residence at Pandukeshwar and Shri Nrisimha Temple in Joshimath, where worship will continue.
This year’s Char Dham Yatra, which began on April 30, set a new record with 51 lakh pilgrims visiting the shrines, compared to 48 lakh last year. Over 16.5 lakh devotees visited Badrinath alone. Kedarnath closed on October 23, while Gangotri and Yamunotri closed on October 22. The six-month yatra is the backbone of Uttarakhand’s economy, supporting local livelihoods and preserving Himalayan temple traditions.
When Himalayan temples close for winter, faith does not pause. It migrates to lower abodes, proving devotion adapts to nature’s rhythms. This is the wisdom of Sanatana Dharma.
