The Baladevjew Temple in Kendrapara is preparing for Rath Yatra with technical support from IIT Bhubaneswar, after last year’s procession faced a serious setback when wheel damage caused the chariot to tilt.
This year, temple authorities are working closely with experts to ensure the safe construction and smooth movement of the 67-foot-tall chariot. The chariot, Bramahataladhwaja, is being built with extra care, with 10 new wheels under construction and four old wheels being repaired for reuse. Around 45 carpenters have been engaged since May 1, and the work is being monitored with greater attention to strength, safety, and precision.
The involvement of IIT Bhubaneswar shows how tradition and technical expertise can come together to protect sacred festivals. Experts from the School of Mechanical Sciences have advised the use of fresh timber wherever possible and have also pointed out problems on the 2-km route between the temple and Mausima Temple. Uneven curves on the road could affect the smooth pulling of the chariot, so repairs have been recommended before the festival begins.
Temple officials have said that about 2,700 cubic feet of sal and other timber has already been procured, but more quality wood is still needed to complete the work properly. The challenge reflects the effort required to preserve a grand ritual while ensuring no compromise on safety.
Rath Yatra is not just a festival. It is a living expression of faith, discipline, and community effort. Every wheel, every beam, and every road leading to the temple carries the devotion of thousands.
