A temple festival at Killai near Chidambaram turned tragic after a stockpile of firecrackers exploded on Monday night, leaving 20 people injured.
Devotees had gathered at Killai Kuchipalayam to witness the rituals of a local Mariamman temple when the blast occurred around 9.30 p.m. Police said a group of devotees was lighting lamps near the temple when a spark fell on the firecrackers kept nearby. The resulting explosion sent sparks into the crowd and caused burn injuries to several people.
Those injured include Gomathy, Sumathy, Rajakumari, Chellammal, Uma, Ramya, Jeevitha, Sandhya, and 12 others. They were rushed to Chidambaram General Hospital and Cuddalore Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
This incident has once again exposed the risks that come with large temple gatherings when fire safety is not handled with enough care. Festivals are meant to be moments of devotion, prayer, and community. But when basic precautions are ignored, they can turn into scenes of pain and panic in seconds.
Temple authorities and organisers must treat safety as a sacred duty. Firecrackers, lamps, crowds, and ritual spaces must never be allowed to overlap without proper control. Clear safety zones, emergency readiness, and strict supervision are essential during such events.
The injured are now under treatment, while police continue further investigation into the incident.
