Majestic flag soars above UNESCO’s Chola marvel in Tamil Nadu. Brihadeeswarar Temple launches 18-day Chithirai Brahmotsavam with sacred dwajarohanam.
The Chithirai festival commenced today at Thanjavur’s Arulmigu Brihadeeswarar Temple with a grand flag hoisting ceremony. Sri Chandrasekhar Swami and Panchamurthy murtis positioned near the flagpole received special abhishekam as thousands gathered in devotion.
Kodiyetram marks Day 1 of the 18-day extravaganza built by Raja Raja Chola I in 1010 AD. Main Chithirai Therottam chariot procession awaits on April 20, drawing massive crowds to witness the colossal temple car.
Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s Great Living Chola Temples, celebrates Chithirai Brahmotsavam annually in the Tamil month Chithirai (April-May). This 11-storey 216-foot vimana enshrines Brihadeeswara Peruman alongside Periya Nayaki and Chandikeswara. The festival embodies Chola-era Shaiva grandeur, central to Sanatana Dharma.
