Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic candidate in the upcoming New York City mayoral race, has sparked controversy after photos showed him visiting temples while wearing shoes. The images, widely circulated on social media, prompted outrage among many Hindu community members, who called it a sign of disrespect toward sacred traditions.

Critics argued that entering temple premises with footwear reflects ignorance or disregard for Hindu customs, which consider temple floors holy spaces where shoes are strictly prohibited. One user commented, “That he wore shoes inside a temple says a lot about how much he respects Hindus. This made me sick to my stomach.” Others expressed disappointment, noting that such gestures matter deeply to practicing Hindus worldwide.

However, Mamdani’s supporters defended him, claiming the photographs were taken outside the temple sanctum, near the shoe stand, and not inside the inner premises. “It is the area to walk to the shoe stand. The temple door is behind him,” one user clarified.

The incident has become a talking point ahead of the November 4 election, raising questions about cultural awareness among political candidates. Mamdani, who has spoken about his Hindu heritage in the past, has yet to issue a formal statement. Authorities are reportedly reviewing the circumstances surrounding his temple visits.
