A theft was reported at Kolani Amaramkavu Devi temple in Thodupuzha on Sunday night, with the thief breaking open three donation boxes inside the temple and stealing around ₹15,000.
The murti inside the sanctum sanctorum was also found overturned. No other valuables were reported missing. After the theft, the accused allegedly scattered turmeric powder in the area and also stole the CCTV footage.
The theft was first noticed by the temple priest when he arrived early in the morning to open the temple. Following a complaint lodged by temple authorities, Thodupuzha police launched a probe.
The act of overturning the murti and scattering turmeric powder appears to be an intentional act of desecration, adding insult to the theft of devotees’ offerings.
Such crimes against sacred temples violate the faith and devotion of millions who offer their hard-earned money with pure hearts.
