The Hindu community in Berlin, Germany, marked a historic milestone with the grand opening of the Ganesha Temple on June 8, 2026. The new temple, with its 17-metre-high intricately carved entrance tower (Gopuram), makes it one of the largest Hindu temples in Europe.
Following a grand Maha Kumbhabhishekam ceremony and days of festivities, the Sri Ganesha Temple has officially opened its doors to devotees in the Neukölln district in Berlin. The inauguration saw not just rituals but also cultural activities and music performances by many devotees. Reportedly, the temple was founded on September 25, 2005, and had been undergoing a construction process spanning over two decades. The project has been entirely financed through donations and voluntary services.
Located on the edge of the Hasenheide park, the seventeen-meter-high tower, adorned with hundreds of sculptures and reliefs, is recognizable as part of a Hindu temple even from a distance.
The Sri Ganesha Temple in Berlin is governed by a board of ten volunteers and supported by three pujaris who will oversee the religious activities daily. It is registered as a non-profit organisation by the Finanzamt für Körperschaften. Its Gopuram is made entirely from hand-carved granite sourced from Tamil Nadu. The design showcases the craftsmanship of Indian stonemasons.
The temple will remain open to the public every day from 4 pm to 6 pm. There will be daily rituals, including Aarti, conducted both in the morning and evening. The temple will welcome visitors from diverse backgrounds and aims to foster a sense of unity among people living in Berlin.
Moreover, Hindu children will now have a dedicated space to learn about their rituals and celebrate festivals like Diwali, Navratri, Ganesh Chaturthi, and more with their community.
The opening of Sri Ganesha Temple in Berlin strengthens Hindu cultural identity and provides a spiritual home for the diaspora in Europe.
