A dance performance portraying Hindu Goddess Kali has sparked controversy after the performer’s attire drew backlash. The show was staged by the dance production group Nitya-Faculty of Sight at the Mohit Mancha auditorium in Tala Park, Kolkata, on August 8, as part of a mythological dance drama titled Mahavidya.
Following the backlash, the organisers apologised and promised stricter costume and stage checks in the future. They said the choreography, dance movements and presentation were creative decisions made by the artist and that the performer had not rehearsed in the costume, leaving them unaware of what she would ultimately wear.
The organisers said they had expected the performer to wear attire similar to the accompanying dancers, but she appeared on stage in a different costume. In a statement on Facebook, the group acknowledged that it should have exercised greater oversight over the costumes and stage presentation and apologised for the lapse. They described the incident as unsightly and undesirable.
As the video spread online, some people defended the performance, saying they did not find the portrayal insulting. Others criticised the costume and presentation of the performer portraying Maa Kali, with some describing the depiction as inappropriate and disrespectful. The incident has once again brought the debate over free expression versus religious beliefs into focus.
The group expressed regret to viewers, artists, and well-wishers, and promised to ensure that costumes and other aspects of the stage presentation are finalised and checked in advance for future performances.
