SIT probing alleged embezzlement at Ram Temple has instructed trust officials and temple functionaries not to leave Ayodhya, as investigators found discrepancies in the documentation of offerings like gold, silver, and precious stones.
The three-member Special Investigation Team issued the instruction before leaving for Lucknow on Sunday (June 21, 2026).
One of the key findings pertains to records of gold and silver jewellery and other precious stones, including diamonds, offered by devotees to Lord Ram. Investigators found discrepancies in the documentation and accounting of such offerings.
During questioning, several office-bearers of the temple trust were unable to provide satisfactory explanations regarding inventory, storage, and accounting of gold, silver ornaments and other valuable items received as offerings.
Major irregularities may have occurred during the Maha Kumbh Mela period in January-February 2025, when the temple witnessed an unprecedented influx of devotees. Nearly 10 lakh devotees visited the temple daily during an over two-month period, and donation boxes reportedly filled with currency notes within hours.
Daily investigation reports, including questioning of trust officials, have been saved in digital form and will be given final shape before being presented to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. SIT was sending reports of findings to the CM’s Office on a daily basis.
The SIT probe also covered the purchases of land in different phases by the temple trust and the procurement of building materials. Temple Trust allegedly purchased land several times more than market rates, an issue vocally raised by the Samajwadi Party and the Aam Aadmi Party.
The UP government constituted the SIT on June 13 at the request of the temple trust, following allegations of misappropriation of donations. SIT comprises Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, IG S. Kiran, and Finance Secretary Neel Ratan.
