On the auspicious occasion of Ganga Dussehra, devotees gathered at the ghats of the Saryu River in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, to offer prayers and take a holy dip.
This Hindu festival marks the divine descent of Maa Ganga to Earth, believed to wash away sins and grant spiritual purification. People took a dip in the Saryu River, believing it would wash away their sins. The holy ritual was observed as part of Ganga Dussehra celebrations.
Spiritual chants, vibrant rituals, and the faith of thousands created a sacred atmosphere at the banks of the Saryu. Chanting prayers and performing rituals, worshippers thronged ghats across the city from early morning to seek blessings and spiritual renewal.
Ganga Dussehra takes place on Dashami (10th day) of the waxing moon (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu calendar month Jyeshtha. In Sanskrit, dasha means ten and hara means destroy; thus, bathing in the river during these ten days is believed to rid the person of ten sins or ten lifetimes of sins.
The Saryu River is a sacred lifeline of Ramayana history, revered in scriptures as the divine river where Lord Rama and his ancestors performed rituals. It is considered a purifier of the soul and a symbol of divine grace.
