On the 6th day of the annual Chithirai Ther Festival at the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, the processional deity Namperumal gives darshan to devotees aboard the Velli Yaanai Vahanam (Silver Elephant vehicle). The Velli Yaanai, a beautifully crafted silver elephant palanquin, carries the utsava murti through the temple streets amid Vedic chanting, temple bells, and the chants of thousands of Vaishnava devotees gathered along the route.
The Velli Yaanai represents both grandeur and gentleness, combining the martial strength of the elephant with the auspicious, sacred qualities it holds in Vaishnava tradition. As Namperumal rides on the Silver Elephant, the procession is treated as a living divya kalyanam, visually reinforcing the idea of the Lord as the divine ruler, protector, and beloved of His devotees.
The 6th‑day Silver‑Elephant vahanam falls within the 11‑day Viruppan Thirunal (Chithirai Ther Festival), which begins with flag hoisting and continues with Namperumal appearing on various vehicles, such as Hamsa, Simha, Yaali, Garuda, and Hanumantha, each symbolising different attributes of the Lord. The Silver Elephant day is especially cherished by regular Srirangam devotees, who see it as a precious and intimate opportunity to receive the Lord’s grace up close during this sacred Tamil month celebration.
