The Madras High Court has ruled that peaceful coexistence between different faiths cannot be disrupted based on mere apprehensions.
In a recent case, the Court refused to stop the construction of a Christian church near a Muthumariamman Temple in Dhayapuram village. The petition had raised concerns about possible law and order issues due to the proximity of the two religious structures.
However, the Court observed that such concerns alone are not sufficient grounds to interfere, especially when authorities had already conducted field inspections and found no objections from residents. It noted that the Constitution guarantees peaceful coexistence of people from different faiths.
The authorities informed the Court that a prayer hall had already existed at the site for nearly 25 years and that the current construction was only for rebuilding the structure. There was no evidence of any violation of law or threat to public order.
Based on these findings, the Court declined to interfere with the District Collector’s order and dismissed the plea.
This judgment highlights an important principle. Respect for one’s own faith must go hand in hand with peaceful coexistence in society.
At the same time, temples remain sacred spaces that deserve dignity, protection, and sensitivity in their surroundings.
