Police have arrested two women for their alleged involvement in a brutal incident where another woman was stripped and paraded on the road with a garland of slippers around her neck in Ulhasnagar, Mumbai. The assault followed a dispute over a caste panchayat’s ban on a Rajput family entering a temple.
The incident occurred on Friday, May 15, 2026, in Waghri Nagar during a religious programme and community feast at the temple premises. A youth from the victim’s family objected to the caste panchayat’s restriction, stating his family had done nothing wrong. He entered the temple, angering some members of another community present there.
According to the police complaint, the accused attacked the youth’s family home with sticks and rods, assaulting the men and threatening the women with severe consequences if they approached the police. When the victim, her sister and daughter headed to the police station to lodge a complaint, the accused intercepted them, dragged them to the road, partially stripped the victim, cut her hair with scissors, and forced a slipper garland around her neck.
The victim was paraded on the road for nearly two kilometres while several people were forced to touch her feet. Videos of the incident showing bystanders watching and recording on mobile phones appeared widely on social media.
Police revealed that both families belong to the same community. The victim’s family had faced social boycott following earlier allegations against them. The Ulhasnagar Central police registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, against multiple accused, including Jyuli Waghri, Vinu Waghri, Pappi Waghri, Nitin Thorat, and others.
Two women have been arrested while the main accused remains at large. Cases have been registered against members of both families.
This heinous act of humiliation against a Hindu woman violates the sanctity of our faith and the constitutional right to temple entry without caste discrimination.
