Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have pressed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an independent probe into the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
In their joint letter, the Opposition leaders said the Prime Minister’s silence on the matter is unacceptable and that he has a duty to ensure accountability and restitution. They called for a comprehensive investigation into the Trust’s finances, including the handling of cash, gold, and silver offerings.
The letter also alleged that lakhs of devotees who donated in faith have been betrayed. It further said that the credibility of both the government and the Trust depends on a transparent response, and that the people of India are watching.
The issue has intensified after eight people were arrested and the probe widened to include around 30 more employees involved in counting offerings. The Uttar Pradesh government has already formed a Special Investigation Team. Meanwhile, the Trust has also seen the resignations of its general secretary and another trustee amid mounting scrutiny.
The Opposition’s demand has now turned the Ram temple donation row into a major political flashpoint ahead of Parliament’s monsoon session.
