Lakhs of devotees gather for Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam

The famous Ambubachi Mela has begun today at the Kamakhya Temple in Assam and will conclude on June 26, with lakhs of devotees gathered for this sacred festival.

Ambubachi Mela 2026 is a major annual festival at Kamakhya Temple, Guwahati, celebrating the menstruation of Goddess Kamakhya — a symbol of fertility and womanhood.

During the festival, the gates of Kamakhya Temple will remain closed. The temple gates will reopen at 9:08 p.m. on the 25th of this month, marking the end of the sacred closure period.

This year, the shrine will remain closed from June 22 to 25, and will re-open on June 26.

It is estimated that several lakh devotees visit the Kamakhya temple during the Ambubachi Mela, with last year’s footfall estimated at around 7 lakh.

The Kamrup Metro District administration has made elaborate arrangements for the devotees, including pilgrim camps, toilets, bathing facilities, drinking water, and medical camps.

The Ambubachi Mela is one of the holiest festivals in India, celebrated at the revered Kamakhya Devi Temple, where the goddess is believed to undergo her annual menstruation cycle.

The temple, regarded as a Shakti Peetha, holds special importance during this time as it becomes the focal point for rituals honouring feminine energy.
