Kollur Police in Karnataka have arrested 21-year-old Nasir Hussain from Rajasthan’s Alwar district for creating a fake website mimicking the official Sri Mookambika Temple portal and defrauding devotees by issuing bogus advance room bookings.
The scam involved collecting payments from pilgrims seeking accommodation at the temple and sending fake receipts, which was exposed after the temple’s Executive Officer filed a complaint on November 3. A case was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 318(2) and 318(4), along with IT Act Sections 66(C) and 66(D), leading to a special investigation team that traced and apprehended the accused on December 19, seizing his laptop.
Hussain was produced in the Byndoor court on December 20 and remanded to judicial custody. Police have urged devotees to book only via the official temple website and stay vigilant against fraudulent sites exploiting faith for profit.
