A burglary at the Kalleli Shiva Chamundi temple near Konni in Pathanamthitta has shocked devotees, with burglars stealing gold ornaments and about ₹20,000 in cash early on Sunday.
According to temple authorities, the thieves broke into the temple and forced open a room where gold offerings were kept. The stolen items include 22 gold thalis, five gold pottu ornaments, gold figurines, and other valuables. The cash taken from the temple’s Annadanam donation box has also been reported missing. The total loss is estimated at around ₹3.5 lakh.
The theft came to light when the chief priest arrived in the morning to open the temple. He immediately informed the temple management, which then alerted the Konni police. Officers reached the spot and began an investigation.
Police also recovered a bunch of keys near the temple premises, which is suspected to have been used in the burglary. Investigators said they have received initial leads on the suspect and have intensified the probe.
The incident has raised serious concern over temple security and the safety of offerings made by devotees. For worshippers, such thefts are not just financial crimes. They are an attack on trust, faith, and sacred duty.
