A 66-year-old temple priest was taken into custody after locals allegedly found him in an objectionable situation with a girl inside a temple at Ramachandrapuram.

The accused, identified as Sayanna alias Sailoo, allegedly locked the temple from outside and remained inside with the girl. Locals who noticed suspicious activity entered the temple and allegedly found the priest with the girl.

They informed the police, following which the priest was taken into custody. A video of the incident, reportedly recorded on the night of August 13, was also brought to the police’s notice.

Ramachandrapuram Police registered a case and began an investigation into the incident. The police said the girl’s statement was yet to be recorded and her age was also being verified. Further action would be taken based on the investigation and the girl’s statement.

The incident has sparked outrage among locals and raised concerns about the safety of children visiting religious places. The police have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted and strict action will be taken against the accused if the allegations are proven.

Temple authorities have also expressed shock over the incident and promised to review security measures at the temple to prevent such incidents in the future.

When sanctity is breached, even the sacred must answer to the law.
