Devotee Nadiya (32) from Thanjavur was killed, and two injured when the ceiling collapsed at Samayapuram Mariamman Temple’s Sannathi Street mandapam in Trichy.

Incident occurred on Sunday as devotees rested after darshan at a prominent Tamil Nadu Shakti peetham. Fellow bhaktas rescued the injured using an 108 ambulance to MG Memorial Hospital.

Samayapuram Police cordoned off the area, investigating the cause. Temple attracts thousands of walking padayatras staying overnight for morning prayers to Adi Shakti Mariamman.

Many Tamil temples suffer maintenance lapses despite massive donations. Incident underscores the urgent need for structural audits to protect the safety of Hindu pilgrimages.

Samayapuram tragedy demands immediate temple infrastructure reforms, where devotees’ lives lost highlight criminal neglect of sacred Shakti shrines during peak worship seasons.
