Entry fees to the world-famous Konark Sun Temple in Puri district will be waived on December 30 to mark the celebration of Samba Dashami, a unique Odia festival rooted in devotion to Surya. Normally, adult visitors from India, BIMSTEC, and SAARC nations pay Rs 40 each, while foreign nationals pay Rs 600. However, on this auspicious day, all visitors will receive free entry. Additionally, children under 15 and physically disabled visitors already enjoy year-round free access.
Samba Dashami celebrates the cure of Lord Krishna’s son, Samba, from leprosy after 12 years of penance to the Sun God near Konark. On this day, mothers pray to Surya at the Sun Temple and Chandrabhaga Beach for their children’s health, offering special foods such as khichdi, chakuli, poori, and poda pitha. Devotees also take holy dips and participate in pulling the Sun God’s chariot, making it a significant day for Surya Puja across Odisha.
The festival highlights the ancient belief in sunlight’s healing power against diseases like leprosy and serves as a vibrant cultural and spiritual celebration deeply tied to the history and divinity of the Konark Sun Temple. Free entry on Samba Dashami allows pilgrims and visitors to connect with this sacred heritage without barriers, honoring both tradition and the temple’s role as a living monument to Surya bhakti.
