Halasuru Someshwara Swamy Temple in Bengaluru bans weddings after frequent divorces. One of the city’s oldest Shiva temples stopped conducting marriages because couples who married there were frequently getting divorced. Temple priests were repeatedly called to courts as witnesses in divorce cases, disrupting temple operations and bringing negative attention to the sacred space.
The temple administration decided to end all wedding ceremonies to avoid further legal complications and protect the temple’s sanctity. Priests found themselves spending excessive time in courts instead of performing daily rituals and serving devotees. The constant association with divorce proceedings was also damaging the temple’s reputation and creating negative perceptions among the community.
This decision reflects the growing concern among temple authorities about maintaining the sacred atmosphere and avoiding unnecessary legal entanglements. Temples are meant for worship, devotion, and sacred rituals, not for becoming entangled in marital disputes and court proceedings. While marriages are traditionally performed at temples as auspicious ceremonies, the frequency of divorces and subsequent court appearances forced the administration to reconsider.
