Hindu Janajagruti Samiti files complaint against Ranveer Singh for insulting Goddess Chamundadevi at IFFI Goa. The Bollywood actor mimicked a scene from Kantara Chapter 1 at the closing ceremony of the 56th International Film Festival of India and referred to Chamundi Daiva, revered by the Tulu community, as a female ghost. HJS representatives Pramod Tuyekar and Dilip Shetye submitted a memorandum to Panaji police seeking registration of an offence under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for hurting religious sentiments.
HJS stated that Chamundi Daiva is considered a sacred family deity of the Tulu community, and depicting or describing the deity in a derogatory manner amounts to disrespect. Such acts may cause public resentment and disturb peace. The organisation demanded that Ranveer Singh issue a public apology and assure he would refrain from making such remarks in the future. It also urged IFFI organisers to frame a code of conduct to ensure no religious deity is depicted insultingly at future events.
Ranveer Singh issued an apology on Instagram after facing backlash. He said his intention was to highlight Rishab Shetty’s incredible performance in Kantara. He stated that if he hurt anyone’s sentiments, he sincerely apologizes. The controversy erupted just days before the release of his upcoming film Dhurandhar. Social media users launched boycott calls, criticizing the actor for being tone-deaf and insensitive to Daiva traditions revered in coastal Karnataka.
