A major theft has been reported at the Palakkal Bhagavathi Temple in Thaikkatt, near Guruvayur, where a burglar made off with gold ornaments and cash in the early hours of the morning. The incident came to light when temple authorities arrived for morning duties and discovered that the temple office and certain sacred areas had been ransacked.
Preliminary estimates indicate that about seven sovereigns of gold ornaments, including sacred thiruvabharanam meant for the murti, were taken, along with around ₹1.25 lakh kept in the office locker. The stolen items include three necklaces offered to the Goddess, ornamental beads linked to Lord Ayyappa, and various thalis and small gold offerings from devotees. The cash was reportedly taken from an almirah inside the office, and a secondary room within the complex showed signs of an attempted break‑in as well.
The intruder is believed to have entered the temple premises by scaling the compound wall on the western side, where flattened grass and footprints were later found. To reach the temple office, the thief broke the tower bolt on the double‑leaf door, reportedly using a large stone that was recovered near the entrance. Evidence suggests the offender first forced open the strong‑room shutter and then accessed the locker inside, underscoring the planning and methodical nature of the break‑in.
The Guruvayur Police have registered a case and launched a forensic investigation, with local leaders and senior officers visiting the temple to inspect the site. The theft has triggered alarm among devotees, as the stolen ornaments are not only valuable in monetary terms but also deeply sacred, used in the daily worship and ritual adornment of the murti. The incident has reignited debate over security at smaller Hindu temples, many of which rely on basic fencing and minimal night surveillance despite storing large volumes of donations and temple‑specific valuables.
