A disturbing incident has emerged from the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, where a Special Assistant Inspector (SSI) was caught on camera physically assaulting a Hindu monk named Arumugam near a golden temple in the Ariyoor area.
According to reports, SSI Narasimhan was performing highway patrol duty when he stopped and interrogated Arumugam, who was standing peacefully on the roadside. During the interaction, Narasimhan suddenly slapped the monk, walked away to his vehicle, and then returned to slap him a second time.
Bystanders recorded the assault on their mobile phones, and the footage went viral, sparking widespread outrage. The Hindu Munnani has condemned the attack, demanding strict disciplinary action against the police officer.
The incident reportedly took place on September 1, when highway patrol police encountered the 70-year-old monk dressed in saffron robes standing on the road. The officer allegedly got down from his vehicle and slapped the monk multiple times before the video footage captured the assault.
The viral video has triggered demands for accountability and raised questions about police conduct towards religious figures and civilians.
