The HR&CE Department has unveiled a comprehensive road map for the 2028 Mahamaham festival in Kumbakonam, with a Heritage Committee tasked to finalise temple renovation plans.
Following discussions with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and inter-departmental review meetings at the district level, an expert Heritage Committee was constituted to inspect ancient temples in the region. The committee has assessed the renovation and consecration (kumbhabhishekam) requirements of the temples and is expected to submit its final report within a few days.
The report will help the department expedite restoration and other preliminary works on a large scale ahead of the festival. Mahamaham, held once every 12 years when Jupiter enters Leo, is one of the most sacred Hindu festivals where devotees take a holy dip in the Mahamaham tank.
The 2028 Mahamaham is expected to draw millions of pilgrims from across India and abroad. Southern Railway has already been allocated 15 rakes for operating ‘Mahamaham Special’ trains to ensure adequate transport facilities during the festival period.
